Judith Steel (Associate Professor), a native of Pittsburgh, PA, holds an MA in Dance from the University of Colorado and is a practicing Certified Movement Analyst through the Laban Institute of Movement Studies in NYC. Ms. Steel has studied with Daniel Nagrin, Hanya Holm, Murray Louis, and Lynn Simonson and has performed in dance companies in NYC and PA, including the repertory company Pittsburgh Dance Alloy. She has been on the dance department faculties of Ohio State Univ., SUNY Brockport, and the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance in London, England; and has taught as a guest artist at the National School for Modern Dance in Copenhagen, Denmark. An interest in collaborative choreographic work, has generated projects with artists from multiple disciplines funded by the PA Council on the Arts and the VA Commission for the Arts. Ms. Steel’s ongoing study and work in the area of dance somatics/science and its relationship to training expressive performers has resulted in innovative collaborations with Dr. Lisa Shoaf of the VCU Dept. of Physical Therapy and most recently a semester teaching residency with Kedzie Penfield at the Drama School of Queen Margaret University College in Edinburgh, Scotland.
