Community
The VCU Department of Dance and Choreography is committed to stimulating and engaging community interest and involvement in dance. The department is active in presenting performances, master classes, lecture-demonstrations, artists-in-residence and other services for a broad community.
"(VCU) has a strong history of outreach to the community beyond campus borders." – Mid-Atlantic Art Foundation panelist notes responding to the department's 1997-98 grant application.
"VCU's Dance Department ... knows how to make non-Western dance forms comprehensible to Richmond audiences." – Roy Proctor, Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Our presenting goal is to benefit the larger Richmond community, dance students, the department and the university by:
- expanding audiences' ideas of what dance can be,
- promoting awareness of a variety of dance forms,
- stimulating interest in dance as an art form,
- providing accessibility to people who otherwise would not experience dance,
- building a new and more discerning audience for dance,
- helping encourage intercultural awareness through dance, and
- supporting upcoming regional, state, and national artists in the development of new work.
