International dance study

VCU Dance students are encouraged to research international dance programs and present a proposal to the faculty for study abroad. During summer, 2007, VCU Dance will administer a summer study abroad program in Edinburgh, Scotland, and encourages students interested in international study to research this and other opportunities.

VCU Dance Summer Study: Production & Criticism at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe

The Department of Dance and Choreography of VCU Arts and the Office of International Education are pleased to offer a creative opportunity in Production and Criticism in beautiful Edinburgh, Scotland. Students will be developing their production and criticism skills by observing and participating in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, one of the largest international arts festivals in the world.

Credit Options and Academic Requirements: 6 credits (3 credits in DANC 360 and 3 credits in DANC 491)

Program Directors: This program is co-led by Adam Chamberlin, Lighting Designer and Instructor for the Dance and Choreography Department who has worked and designed internationally, and by Lea Marshall, Producer/Assistant Professor at VCU Dance, freelance dance writer for local, national and international publications, who has covered the Edinburgh Fringe as a critic for the last three years.

Summer Study: New Prague Dance Festival: Prague, Czech Republic
The New Prague Dance Festival is held in multiple venues in the beautiful medieval city of Prague where 290 groups among schools, organizations, artistic associations, and universities from all over the world, 3,800 dancers, 840 choreographies participated in past festivals presenting their choreographic and artistic creativity, sharing new ideas, taking master classes, and networking.

Summer Study: Pro Danza Italia/USA: Castiglioncello, Italy
Pro Danza Italia/USA is a 4-week intensive summer dance Workshop in Italy on the Tuscan coast. This unique multicultural program of study in varied and innovative approaches to contemporary movement and modern dance technique and composition was created by faculty from the dance departments of Bard College and Bennington College.

Semester Abroad: Queensland University of Technology: Brisbane, Australia

Semester Abroad: University of Surrey - Guildford: Guildford, Surrey, England
A commitment to all dance forms underpins the BA Dance and Culture degree programs at UniS. A focus on dances of the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries, from ballet to Kathak, from tap to tango, allows students to study and experience dance forms as they exist today and their precedents. Staff actively engage in choreography and performance, research and consultancy work as well as teaching. The campus is home to a unique archive, the National Resource Centre for Dance, and the Labanotation Institute, which holds the most comprehensive collection of Labanotation scores in the UK.
