Graduate degree programs in Art History include the Master of Arts (M.A.) with individual tracks in Art Historical Studies, Architectural History and Museum Studies, and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The graduate program places a strong emphasis on multicultural and interdisciplinary approaches to the history of art. Students in the Masters program select one of three different curricular tracks. The Art Historical track prepares students for academic and professional careers in art historical research, scholarship and continued post-graduate or doctoral programs. The Architectural History track takes advantage of Virginia's rich tradition of colonial land and modern architecture to prepare students for careers as architectural historians, design consultants and preservationists. The Museum Studies track prepares students for careers in all aspects of museum administration and operation. The Ph.D. program offers the doctoral degree with a strong focus in Modern (Renaissance to the present) or Non-Western areas of concentration. Ph.D. students develop expertise in both theoretical and methodological applications of the discipline as well as scholarly expertise in a specifically defined area of art historical inquiry. Ph.D. students are prepared to pursue careers at the highest professional and academic levels of the discipline.
