Admission Requirements

All applicants to the Department of Art History graduate program must fulfill all University and School of the Arts application requirements as presented in the current VCU Graduate Bulletin and Application for Graduate Admission.

In addition, the following departmental requirements must also be fulfilled. Applicants who do not meet all minimum requirements may be admitted to the program on a provisional basis, pending approval of the department graduate committee.

M.A. in Art Historical or Architectural History Studies:

- B.A. or B.F.A., with 21 credit hours of undergraduate courses.
- 3.2 GPA on last 60 hours of undergraduate course work.
- GRE score of 1000 cumulative verbal/analytical.

M.A. in Museum Studies:

- B.A. or B.F.A., with 15 credit hours of undergraduate courses.
- 3.2 GPA on last 60 hours of undergraduate course work.
- GRE score of 1000 cumulative verbal/analytical.

Ph.D.:

For those holding an M.A. in Art History:

- Applicants with a master's degree in a non-Art History field may also apply, but must complete a minimum of 6 additional credits of graduate level Art History course work, including ARTH 590, plus departmental comprehensive exams before full standing is awarded.

- 3.8 GPA on previous M.A. course work.

- GRE score of 1000 cumulative verbal/analytical, plus minimum score of 4 on GRE Writing Assessment exam.

- Copy of a completed M.A. thesis or two writing samples.

- An interview with the Director of Graduate Studies and the prospective adviser is strongly encouraged.

For those holding only a B.A. in art history or a related field:

- 21 credit hours of undergraduate Art History courses, including 6 credits of introductory surveys.

- 3.2 GPA on the last 60 hours of undergraduate course work.

- GRE score of 1000 cumulative verbal/analytical, plus minimum score of 4 on GRE Writing Assessment exam.

- Undergraduate research paper in art history.

- An interview with the Director of Graduate Studies and the prospective adviser is strongly encouraged but not required.

- Students must first complete all the requirements for the MA in Historical Studies, including ARTH 799: Thesis, before attaining full standing in the Ph.D. program.

- To continue into the Ph.D. program, students must maintain a 3.8 GPA in their MA course work, secure the support of the prospective dissertation director, and make a formal written application to the departmental Graduate Committee during the last semester of M.A. course work.
