All students enrolled in the Department of Art History Graduate Program must pass the departmental comprehensive slide exam administered each semester, and demonstrate proficiency in one foreign language. Ph.D. students who have completed either a comprehensive slide exam or a language requirement as part of an M.A. program may appeal to have these requirements waived from their doctoral program. In addition, the following requirements apply to each respective track.
M.A. in Art Historical Studies:
21 credits graduate ARTH area courses, including 6 credits of 700 level
seminar courses.
3 credits ARTH.590: Historiography and Methodology.
6 credits ARTH.799: Thesis.
30 Credits Total
Comprehensive essay exam.
May be completed full-time in two years.
M.A. in Architectural History:
12 credits graduate architectural history courses.
9 credits graduate ARTH courses, including 3 credits of 700 level seminar courses.
9 credits Museum Studies or Urban Planning.
3 credits ARTH.590: Historiography and Methodology, or ARTH.502:
Historical Preservation and Architectural History 6 credits ARTH.799: Thesis. 39 Credits Total Comprehensive essay exam. May be completed full-time in three years.
M.A. in Museum Studies:
12 credits graduate ARTH courses, including 3 credits of 700 level seminar courses.
12 credits Museum Studies
3 credits Museum Internship
3 credits ARTH.590: Historiography and Methodology.
6 credits ARTH.799: Thesis or ARTH.699: Museum Project
36 Credits Total
Comprehensive essay exam.
Internships As part of the Museum Studies track, the department administers an average of 12 internship opportunities each calendar year with local museums and historic houses. May be completed full-time in three years.
Ph.D.:
9 credits graduate ARTH courses in major area.
6 credits graduate ARTH courses in minor area.
9 credits elective graduate ARTH courses.
- 12 credits graduate ARTH courses must be 700 level seminar courses.
- 6 credits graduate ARTH courses must be in Modern areas and 6 credits
graduate ARTH courses must be in non-Western areas.
6 credits ARTH.899: Dissertation.
30 Credits Total
Two Field Examination essays.
Demonstrated proficiency in two foreign languages (generally inclusive of M.A. required language). May be completed full-time in three years.
