How to Apply
Applying to the VCU Department of Music consists mainly of two parts: the application and the audition.
Undergraduate Application
Students must complete the standard VCU undergraduate application. All application information (including transcripts, test scores and two letters of recommendation) should be sent to the Office of Admissions. Applicants to the Department of Music are also required to complete the essay portion of the application. Please note: Students should have a complete application on file with the Admissions office at least two weeks prior to their requested audition date. Otherwise Department of Music audition results may be delayed.
Audition Request Form
Once you have sent your completed application to the Office of Admissions, you will need to send an Audition Request Form (or submit our online form) to the VCU Department of Music. The Audition Request Form lets us know your preferred audition date, your instrument, your intended major within the Department of Music, along with basic contact information. Please note: Your requested audition date is tentative until confirmed by a letter from VCU Music.
Audition Day
Each Audition Day at VCU Music begins with the registration of all auditionees, a Theory Exam and a welcome session designed to give you more information about studying at VCU Music as well as allowing you and your parent(s) to meet some of our faculty and students.
A Theory Placement Test will be administered in order to assess your music theory aural skills and keyboard skills. Please be advised that the assessments are used as diagnostic tools, for student placement in each of the areas tested. Acceptance into VCU Music is determined by the students entire audition process and application.
While you wait for your warm up and audition there are several ways in which you can find out what life at VCU Music is like: A student Q & A panel of VCU Music students and tours of the VCU Music facilities.
To complete your audition day, you’ll have an informal interview with the department chair, assistant chair or a faculty member. Parents are encouraged to sit in on the interview. The interview is designed for us to get to know you better and to give you an opportunity to ask more specific questions.
