How to Apply – Requirements

Incoming Freshmen

Applicants to VCU Music receive consideration based on their academic transcript, their SAT I or ACT scores, their essay, two letters of recommendation and their audition.

Applicants must have completed a minimum of:

  • 4 units of English
  • 3 units of mathematics (including Algebra I and either Geometry or Algebra II)
  • 3 units of history, social studies and government
  • 2 units of science (at least one laboratory)
  • at least 2 units of a foreign language are strongly recommended

Participation in school music programs, extracurricular activities and employment experience may strengthen an application. Students are strongly encouraged to study with a private teacher prior to auditioning.

Transfer Students

Students interested in transferring to VCU Music should schedule an appointment with Mr. John Patykula, Assistant Chair of the department, to review your transcript.

Following are the academic requirements for transfer students:

  • 30 hours with a 2.25 GPA from other institutions is recommended
  • applicants must be in good standing with last institution attended
  • applicants with fewer than 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) also will be reviewed on the basis of their high school performance and, if under the age of 22, must submit SAT I or ACT scores
