Piano

The piano performance program at VCU Music is marked by excellence in both performance and education. An active group of performers and teachers, the keyboard faculty at VCU Music is dedicated to the musical and career goals of our students. Graduates have successfully pursued advanced music degrees at other major universities and conservatories. Many have held professional positions at such varied locations as Indiana University and VCU, the San Jose Opera, the Kennedy Center and the Virginia Music Teachers Association. Others have achieved outstanding success as performers, music educators, church musicians, and as independent instructors at private music studios.

Piano performance majors have many opportunities to perform at VCU, both within the department of music and in the greater Richmond area. Students may participate in a great variety of chamber music venues. While actively pursuing degrees, students can gain practical and professional experience as ensemble players, accompanists and teachers. The faculty holds master classes weekly, and international guest artists such as Jon Nakamatsu and Christopher OÍRiley give performances and master classes as part of the Mary Anne Rennolds Chamber Concerts series.

In addition to private study, regular offerings in the keyboard area include piano ensemble and accompanying. Students in these classes often perform in piano trios, quartets and a wide variety of other chamber music ensembles.

Our students have been frequent prizewinners in major national and international piano competitions, including the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition, the Stravinsky Competition and MTNAÍs Collegiate Artist Competition. Many have been featured soloists with professional orchestras, as well, including the Seoul Philharmonic, the Park Avenue Symphony of New York, the Charleston Symphony, the Richmond Symphony and others.
