2008 VCU SUMMER STRING CAMP
ON-CAMPUS RESIDENT INFORMATION
TRAVEL INFORMATION
Students and families are expected to provide their own transportation to camp. Students driving themselves to camp must leave their car in a VCU Parking Deck at a cost of $5/day and will not be permitted to drive their vehicle for the duration of camp.
RESIDENCE HALL INFORMATION:

Keys: There will be a $50.00 charge for each lost residence hall room key.
Linens: Linens are available through the GRC. Each linen package is $12 per attendee and includes: 2 sheets, a pillowcase, pillow, 2 towels, l washcloth and a light blanket.
All linen packages must be requested and paid for in advance. Please mark this on the Form Checklist.
If an additional pillow is needed (should the original one be destroyed or lost) the fee is $5. If attendees request additional items (sheet, towel, etc), an entire new linen package must be purchased for $12. The blanket provided is lightweight so attendees may still want to bring a blanket from home.
Rooms: Each attendee’s room contains a bed, desk, chair, dresser, and wardrobe.
Toilet paper and hand soap are provided.
ID cards: All attendees are required to have their VCU ID card on them at all times. This will allow entry into the residence hall. If the card is lost or stolen, a $25 replacement fee will be charged.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner will be provided at the VCU Dining Center. Lunch will be in the form of boxed lunches at the Governor’s School. Breakfast is not served at the dining center on Saturday morning, so please bring money to purchase breakfast that day.
Computer Please do not bring a computer with you to camp. Residents will have limited access to
Access: computers and internet at Cabell Library.
Laundry: Coin-operated laundry facilities are available in the dormitory. Please bring a roll of quarters and your own detergent.
Valuables: VCU does not assume responsibility for any lost or damaged items and therefore recommends that no valuable items (such as jewelry) be brought to camp.
Restrictions: The following are not allowed in the residence halls:
- No pets/animals
- No cooking appliances (example: toaster ovens, etc.)
- No window fans
- No extension cords (unless it has a breaker)
- No incense/candles (anything with an open flame)
- No smoking or tobacco products
No alcohol
Participants are expected to comply with policies and/or staff as directed.
ADDITIONAL RESIDENCE HALL INFORMATION:
- Two highly responsive security guards are on duty 24 hours each day.
- The Head of Residence Life and at least 2 Senior Counselors live on-site as to be available for emergencies.
- One trained Residence Hall Counselor is provided for every 10 students. (Counselors also accompany students to meals, classes and activities.)
- Males and females are assigned to opposite sides of the same floor of the residence hall. Visitors of the opposite sex are not allowed in dorm rooms.
- A housekeeping staff keeps all public areas clean, but students must clean their own rooms, (i.e., wash their own sheets and towels, etc.
- Students found entering or exiting the residence hall after curfew will be dismissed from the program immediately.
- Counselors are undergraduate music majors who have completed a rigorous application procedure and training program, provided references, and passed a background check.
DRESS CODE:
Bring light, casual clothing. Clothing should be neat, comfortable and modest. No bare mid-riffs or backs are permitted. Shirts and shoes must be worn at all times. Pants must fit at the waist, not below. The academic spaces and residence halls are air conditioned so we recommend bringing a sweater or jacket.
SUGGESTED PACKING LIST FOR ALL ON-CAMPUS RESIDENTS:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Linens for a single bed
- A pillow and pillow case
- Blanket and/or bedspread
- Towels and a washcloth
- Personal medications
- Black pants and nice shoes for the concert
- Toiletries
- Tissues
- Alarm clock
- Hairdryer
- Bedside lamp or reading light
- Hangers for your clothes
- Radio/CD player/iPod
- Laundry detergent and change for machines
- Cell phone and charger or a phone card (not permitted during
- instructional sessions)
- Snacks
- Change for vending machines and laundry facilities
- Spending money (for Saturday breakfast and snacks)
- Umbrella and/or raincoat
- Band-Aids (in case you get a blister – we’ll be doing a lot of walking
- around campus!)
- A deck of playing cards or games you enjoy.
- Wire stand
- Instrument
- Several pencils
- Music books and parts
- Any chamber music that you would like to play or sight-read
