VCU Honor Orchestra Festival

VCU Music is proud to present the fourth annual VCU Honor Orchestra Festival to be held in the Singleton Center for the Performing Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, on Saturday January 12, 2008. This festival is specifically designed to provide excellent high-school-age string players the unique opportunity to experience an intense, day-long workshop with other talented youth from the state and to perform side-by-side with members of the VCU Symphony Orchestra.

The only cost to each selected participant is a $25 registration fee. All high school string directors are invited to participate at no cost and a special session on conducting and performance practice will be scheduled during the festival. Major repertoire has been selected to invigorate, stimulate and challenge each student.

Students must be nominated by his or her high school music director. If the student does not have an orchestra director, the private teacher must nominate him/her. Please click here to apply online. Due to the difficulty of the repertoire and the short amount of rehearsal time, it is essential that directors nominate only their best and most serious performers. Selected students must be able to attend all rehearsals and the concert.

Applications must be received by Friday, October 26, 2007. Notification of orchestra personnel and repertoire to be played will be sent by mid-December.

The schedule will also include an opportunity for students interested in auditioning for the VCU Department of Music to do so on Saturday afternoon. Interested senior students should indicate this on their application form.

1 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. -- Faculty Performance, Sonia Vlahcevic Concert Hall

1:40 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. -- Master Classes with VCU String Faculty (VCU Music facilities)

2:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. -- Honors Orchestra Rehearsal, Sonia Vlahcevic Concert Hall Stage and Scholarship Auditions, Faculty Studios

4:45 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. -- Pizza Dinner (provided)

5:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. – Concert Preparation

6 p.m. -- Honors Orchestra Concert, Sonia Vlahcevic Concert Hall
