Chamber Music

VCU pianists may choose to enroll in a chamber music ensemble every semester, offered as “Small Ensembles – Accompanying” in the fall and “Piano Ensembles” in the spring. Every semester, from fourteen to eighteen chamber groups are formed; these include duos with wind, strings and brass instruments and vocalists, piano trios, two-piano and four-hand duos.

Chamber groups play an active role in VCU music community, including off-campus performances as part of the Community Outreach Program. VCU Music chamber ensembles have recently performed at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Grace & Holy Trinity Church, Jordan Kitts Music, Carriage Hill Clubhouse, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and Jamestown High School.

Here is a sample of the repertoire performed in concert during 2005-2006:

J. S. Bach (1685-1750): Sonata for flute and piano BWV 1031 in E-flat Major
Robert Schumann:  Fantasy Pieces op. 73
Johannes Brahms: Sonata Op. 120 No. 1 in F minor
Gabriel Fauré: Fantasie for flute and piano Op. 79
Roger Quilter: Songs (selections)
Samuel Barber: Songs (selections)
Joseph Horovitz (b. 1926): Sonatina for clarinet and piano (1981)
David Gillingham (b. 1947): Diversive Elements for Euphonium, Tuba and Piano (1996)
