Penumbra: Installation Works by Genna Watson

Penumbra
features three recent installations by sculptor Genna Watson focusing on her unique use of man-made and natural materials to convey such vital basic human concepts of shelter, memory and journey. Watson’s exhibition is composed of three complex installations or “rooms” titled Knitting Warm Garments/Bones of the Tiger, Consorts, and Amphoras. Each installation is a haunting visual commentary on the word “Penumbra”, the area between a region of complete shadow and complete illumination, almost a shadow.

“The three sculptural installations that comprise ‘Penumbra’ cover a time period of five years and involve a cohesive and intensive investigation of concepts, ideas, and media that inter-relate. The complexity and layering of diverse materials, textures and imagery translate in play and interwoven connections,” states the artist. Watson uses a muted color palate along with focal points of more intense colors on a variety of materials such as tarpaper, feathers, chicken wire, and thread to create visually abstracted forms that reference memories and how they are imprinted in our mind. Penumbra is a haunting psychological sculptural exploration that alludes to endurance and regeneration, light and shadow.
