VCUarts ANDERSON GALLERY ANNOUNCES 2007 STUDENT EXHIBITIONS
RICHMOND, Va.
Students from Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts will be displaying their finest work in a series of four annual exhibitions at VCUarts Anderson Gallery, 907 1/2 W. Franklin St. Opening receptions are scheduled from 5p.m. until 7p.m. on the first evenings of each exhibit
The Juried Design Exhibition, on view from March 23rd through April 1st, features student work selected by the faculty members from the Communication Arts (Illustration, Drawing and Visual Studies), Graphic Design, Fashion Design, and Interior Design departments. Showing simultaneously will be the Juried Kinetic Imaging Exhibition. |

| VCUarts Kinetic Imaging Department has commissioned Barton Weiss, an award-winning independent film and video producer, editor, and consultant to jury the 2007 Exhibition. A film and video educator for the last 20 years at Texas’s A&M, Southern Methodist University, the University of Texas, and West Virginia State College, Mr. Weiss is also the Producer of “Frame of Mind,“ a monthly series of Texas-made Indie film and video. He is the former President of the Association of Independent Filmmakers, a Co-President of the Board of Directors of the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers, and co-founder of the Dallas Video Festival and the Video Association of Dallas. Weiss received an M.F.A. in Film Directing from Columbia University in 1978 and a B.A. from Temple University in 1975. |

| 36th annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition |

| The 36th annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition, to be held April 13th through April 22nd, will feature students’ paintings, prints, sculptures, site-specific installations, drawings, crafts, photography and video. Undergraduate students currently enrolled in studio classes in the School of the Arts are eligible to enter up to three pieces of work.
Each year, VCUarts Anderson Gallery brings a distinguished expert to judge student entries. The result is a stimulating exhibition, chosen from the most interesting and challenging student work to be found anywhere in the country.
This year the juror for the Juried Fine Arts Exhibition will be Eric Heist. Mr.Heist is a celebrated multi-media fine artist and Co-founder and Director of Momenta Art in Brooklyn, New York. His work has graced many notable spaces including the Schroeder Romero, the Clementine Gallery, Roebling Hall, and White Box in New York City. Momenta Art is a not-for-profit exhibition space that promotes the work of rising artists. For most of the artists, Momenta Art provides a first opportunity to exhibit in New York City outside of a group setting. Heist established Momenta Art with Donna Czapiga and James Mills in Philadelphia in 1986 with the mission of seeking opportunities for and providing venues to emerging artists. Eric Heist received an M.F.A from Hunter College in 1990. He also holds a B.F.A. from the University of Delaware, and is a graduate of Empire State’s Studio Program in New York. On April 6th, Mr. Heist will be holding a lecture on the jury process at 1p.m. at the Anderson Gallery. |

The Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibitions are the final requirements for students earning a master’s degree in the fine arts departments from VCU. The exhibitions provide a forum for emerging artists to display their work and give viewers a “preview” of new directions in the visual arts. Each of the participating artists will exhibit work that represents the culmination of their 2 year masters program in one of the following areas: painting, printmaking, sculpture, crafts, and photography and film. “These exhibitions provide an excellent opportunity for viewers to invest in up-and-coming artists, as many of the pieces on view will be for sale,” said Amy Moorefield, assistant director and curator of collections for the Anderson Gallery.
Round 1 of the Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition will be on display from April 27th– May 6th. Participating artists include from the Crafts and Materials Studies Department: Amanda Douglas, Matthew Isaacson, James Kearns, Josh Rosenberg, and Hyun Kyung Yoon. From the Painting and Printmaking department: Jared Clark, Lauren Clay, Jason Coates, Michael Erickson, and Marian Smith. Photography and Film Department Students include: Dan Currier, Bryant Dameron, Vanessa Fassie, Shane Rocheleau, and Amy Vaughters. Sculpture Department students Christina Fisher and Matt Spahr will also exhibit.
Round 2 of the Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition will be on display from May 11th – May 29th. From the Crafts and Material Studies Department, students Faridah Al Rashaid, Erica Dyen, Sarah Mizer, Nanda Soderberg, Kazue Taguchi, and Erin Williams will be contributing pieces. Painting and Printmaking artists include Heather Harvey and Andrew Kozlowski. Works by Photography and Film students, Nellie Appleby, Gabriel Barlow, Jacob Dodd, and Amanda Sauer will be on exhibit as well as those by Sculpture and Extended Media Department pupils, Taylor Baldwin, Nathan Carder, Anthony Liberto, and Rosemarie Padovano.
M.F.A. students in the Interior Design Department will be holding a separate exhibit on May 4th through the 18th in The Social Gallery of the Virginia Center for Architecture located at 2501 Monument Avenue. A reception will be held opening night. Artists included in this show will be Lee DiJoseph, Catherine Grottenthaler, Jennifer Hamilton, Laura Harris, Yu-Ping Liu, Anisa Mohammed, Katie Thomas, and Julie Wolfe.
M.F.A. students in the Graphic Design Department will also exhibit independently on May 4th through May 11th, with a reception opening evening at 6pm. This show can be seen at 207 West Broad Street on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Works by artists Heather Boone, Ben Gaydos, Hyun-Jin Kim, Matt Klimas, Karen Stein, and Todd Timney will be featured.
