David Freed, Printmaker is the first comprehensive museum exhibition of works by this faculty member from the School of the Arts. The exhibition, curated by Anderson Gallery director, Ted Potter, will run from August 31 – October 28, 2001, with an opening reception on August 31 from 7-9pm
David Freed, Printmaker includes approximately one hundred and twenty framed prints that track seven major themes of interest covering four decades. The prints range from those done in the early sixties to the more political work of the late sixties, to the portraits that the artist has made of friends, family and colleagues.

His more abstract work focuses on weather and landscape prints that date from the early seventies and continue up to the present. The acclaimed Genesis series featuring fourteen etchings and mixed media prints that visually paraphrase the stories from the Old Testament are also on display. The exhibition also includes monotypes, mixed media prints and photographs from David Freed’s personal collection.

Virginia Commonwealth University’s James Branch Cabell Library, Special Collections and Archives will simultaneously display prints and limited edition artist’s books of illustrated poetry that David Freed produced between 1964-98, including What Light Guides This Hand, the one millionth item in the library’s collection. Special Collections and Archives will remain open on August 31 from 5-7pm for public viewing immediately prior to the Anderson Gallery opening reception.

Since 1966, David Freed has been a full-time Professor of Printmaking in the Painting and Printmaking Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. During that time he has not only served as a teacher and mentor to hundreds of printmaking students, but he has also produced an extraordinary body of work. His prints can be found in many individual collections as well as those of numerous museums and major corporations.
"David Freed epitomizes the Artist/Teacher, whose commitment to teaching excellence, enhances, rather than limits his ability to make significant art," says Ted Potter, director of the Anderson Gallery. "This Retrospective Exhibition is a fitting tribute to this Master Printmaker and dedicated Teacher.

Born in Ohio, David Freed received his BFA from Miami University and an MFA from the University of Iowa where he studied under the legendary printmaker, Mauricio Lasansky. Freed has received numerous awards including a Fulbright Grant for study in London. He has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Yugoslavia, West Germany, Hong Kong, Italy and England as well as numerous exhibitions in the United States. His prints are also housed in fifteen American Embassies throughout the world.

The Anderson Gallery offers a fully illustrated catalogue of the exhibition, which is being distributed by the University of Washington Press. The publication features a statement by the Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Charles Wright and an in depth conversation between David Freed and Ted Potter.
