2002-2003 EXHIBITIONS

September 6 through December 1

"The BIG question of humankind’s place in the universe is always presented in my clayworks, but in more everyday terms. That is, I work in a forest surrounding and have the opportunity to study natural forms and colors and integrate them into my work. The serious and the comic are often presented as figurative forms having plant or animal parts. The transformative process that the 2250 degree kiln firing has on the clay is sobering, challenging and always the motivation to create from a more meaningful perspective."

Thorns and Perry Craven of Winston-Salem, N.C. have been collecting Thomas Suomalainen’s work since the late 60’s. Suomalainen is represented in this exhibition by forty works from the Craven’s personal collection. The Cravens are as rare and special in their own way as Suomalainen. They love each and every artwork in their substantial collection and have never acquired a work with a thought to it being a financial investment.

Few artists reach the depth of union between their materials and their mind and body. When Suomalainen’s hands are working the clay there exists a "oneness" between artist and clay that resides in a spiritual state of grace. He is in his own unique "zone," as it were. The works by Thomas Suomalainen must be seen, rather than described. Experienced, rather than read about. The Anderson Gallery is honored to present this collection and wish to thank both Thorns and Perry Craven for allowing us to borrow the work, and Tom for his enthusiasm for this exhibition and his invaluable help in preparing the work for installation.
