Students from Virginia Commonwealth Universitys School of the Arts will display their best work in a series of four exhibitions that begin with the Juried Student Design Exhibition. This exhibition features student work from the interior design, fashion design, photography, and communication art and design departments. It opens with a reception at the Anderson Gallery on Friday, March 22 at 5 p.m.
The annual Juried Student Fine Arts Exhibition, now in its 31st year, will feature paintings, prints, sculptures, drawings, crafts, photography and video. Students are eligible to enter up to three pieces of work. Students do not need to be art majors to participate, but they do need to be enrolled in at least one fine art class during the time of the exhibition. "Each year the Anderson Gallery brings to Virginia Commonwealth University, a noted expert to judge the Student Fine Art Show. The result is a stimulating exhibition, chosen from the most interesting and challenging student work to be found anywhere in the country," said Ted Potter, Director of the Anderson Gallery.
This year the juror for the Student Fine Arts Exhibition will be the national and international multi-media artist, Teresita Fernandez, a 1992 Master of Fine Arts alumnus from VCUs sculpture department. Ms. Fernandez has exhibited her site-specific sculptural environments in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout the United States, including The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC and overseas in Spain, Italy and Japan. In 2000 she completed a commissioned installation project for the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The juror will give a public talk at the Anderson Gallery on April 5 from 1 2 p.m. to evaluate the entries and discuss her selections. The Juried Student Fine Arts Exhibition opens on Friday, April 12 with a reception at 5 p.m. at the Anderson Gallery.
