The State of Broad: Paintings by Brett Busang
Featuring new paintings by the local Richmond painter, Brett Busang focusing on the ever-changing urban landscape of Broad Street. In the en plein airé painting tradition of the French Impressionists, Busang paints on-site to capture the chameleon-like aspect of the construction area surrounding the VCU Broad Street "Corridor."
"When I was younger, I thought I could master painting. I set about learning to draw, which I did for some years, after which I moved up to gesso, canvas, hogbristle, damar varnish, and, finally, gel medium.
The only difference between those early paintings and the ones hanging on these walls is that I am not as sure about how to paint them. I want more substance and less certainty, more of a search, a suspension of knowing.
For me, there is another search going on besides the search for the best possible means of expression, and it is not always so obvious. There are few successes at the end of it, no glittering breakthroughs that can be staged in print to make good biography
All that I can truly say about it is that it must go on. If not, you might as well try to be successful in the usual way because you really dont have anything left to do."
Brett Busang, June 2000.
