SOCIETY EXHIBITION XXII
JUNE 2001
Virginia Commonwealth University will offer the annual Virginia Watercolor Society Exhibition XXII at the Anderson Gallery, 907 1/2 W. Franklin Street, Richmond, VA 23284. The exhibition will open to the public on Sunday, June 10, from noon until 4:00 p.m. and will continue through August 11, Tuesday through Saturday, from noon until 4:00 p.m.

The juror of this years Exhibition XXII is California artist, Katherine Chang Lui, an internationally known painter and teacher. She holds an MS degree from the University of California at Berkley, has been a recipient of funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and has served as Chairman of Jury Selection for the National Watercolor Society. Ms. Chang Liu states, "In jurying my only criteria is quality. But "quality" is a very difficult word to define. I suppose what matters to me, as a viewer of an artists work, is his/her commitment to it."

The Virginia Watercolor Society is the only statewide organization for artists in Virginia. The annual members exhibit travels and is hosted by different locales throughout the state. This year the exhibition will be hosted by the Richmond Region of the VWS and will include around 120 paintings selected from over 700 slides submitted by 344 members. Approximately twenty-five cash awards are presented. The award winning artworks will become part of a traveling exhibition to Williamsburg during the month of September.

The Virginia Watercolor Society was founded in 1979 by Roanoke artists, John Will Creasy and Earnest Johnson, to foster the advancement of the art of watermedia. The organization seeks to cultivate interest and participation in the exciting world of watercolor through the active programming of publications, demonstrations, annual jurored exhibitions and social activities. The current President of the VWS is Midlothian artist, Jill Chafin. In addition to the Anderson Gallery exhibit, the Virginia Watercolor Society will be conducting a workshop as well as holding its annual meeting and Annual Awards Banquet.
