VCUarts Anderson Gallery is pleased to announce the Summer 2007 Exhibition: Transformer, curated by Assistant Director and Curator of Collections, Amy G. Moorefield. This exhibition will open on Friday, June 15th with a public reception from 7 until 9pm. Transformer will be on view in the Anderson Gallery until August 11th, 2007. Showcasing the work of Mark Newport, the artist collective FEAST, McCallum and Tarry, and Annie Schap, this exhibition features dynamic works by artists who address issues of role-playing, gender, and identity through employing alter egos in their art. Each artist utilizes a creative strategy to convince audiences of his/her transformation.

Mark Newport is an MFA graduate of the School of Art Institute of Chicago, and holds a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. He has been exhibiting his pieces in solo shows nationally for more than a decade and in 2006, in the United Kingdom. An award-winning artist, Newport’s work has been featured in numerable publications such as Art in America, The New Times (Phoenix New Times,) The Arizona Republic A&E, and Art Papers.

FEAST is a six-artist collective. Its members, Terral Bolton, Terry Brown, Sherry Griffin, Stephanie Lundy, C.J. Hawn, and Chris Norris, created the group in 2003 with the concept of producing nontraditional photographs that capture the stylized beauty and gender stereotypes of the past.

Terral Bolton is a VCUarts graduate with a BFA in Fashion Design. In Los Angeles, she worked as a fashion stylist and in New York, a fashion editor and advertising director. Bolton is currently a freelance stylist in Richmond.

Terry Brown, a VCUarts Sculpture Department graduate, is a freelance photographer. She has shown her work at Art 6, Artspace, and ADA Gallery in Richmond.

Sherry Griffin holds a BFA in Communication Arts and Design from VCU.  She is presently an MFA candidate at Parsons School of Design in New York City.  Griffin has exhibited her art at Orange Door Gallery and Ipanema in Richmond and at Flippo Gallery in Ashland.

Stephanie Lundy, co-founder of FEAST, is an AAS graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology. She also earned a BFA from George Mason University. She worked in New York City as a designer and fashion editor. A former VCU faculty member, Lundy now designs and owns an international accessory line.

C.J. Hawn, is a Hollins University graduate with a BA in Classics/Philosophy, and a Virginia Commonwealth University graduate with a BFA in Graphic Design. She is Television Program Coordinator at WCVE Community Idea Station.  Hawn has displayed her work at 3 North Architects and VCUarts Anderson Gallery in Richmond.

Chris Norris, co-founder of FEAST, graduated from VCUarts Sculpture Department and holds an MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Norris is now an adjunct faulty member at VCU. His pieces have been featured at the Anderson Gallery, ADA Gallery, and the Flippo Gallery in Virginia, and at White Columns in New York City.

McCallum &Tarry

Bradley McCallum is a VCUarts Sculpture Department graduate. He also studied Sculpture at Yale University School of Art. As half the collective of McCallum and Tarry, McCallum has exhibited socially compelling work nationally and internationally since 1999. He has received various awards and residences and his work has been featured in Issue Magazine and Art Journal. McCallum is an adjunct professor at the Pratt Institute.

Jacqueline Tarry attended The Whitney Independent Study Program in Manhattan and holds a BA in philosophy from State University College at Buffalo. Her work was part of the 2004 Independent Study Program Studio Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Tarry and husband, Bradley McCallum, are internationally acclaimed for their video and photographic work. Together they participate in public projects, conferences, symposiums, and lectures promoting awareness of social issues.

Annie Schap

Annie Schap is an MFA graduate of the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore. She earned her BFA from the University of Arizona. Schap has exhibited her work in Manhattan, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Tuscon, Arizona. She has been highlighted in ARTnews magazine and in the University of Arizona Undergraduate Journal of Literature and Art.
