Three-Summer Master of Music degree in Music Education
VCU Music is pleased to offer a Three-Summer Master of Music degree with an emphasis in Music Education. The program is designed so that the primary coursework for the degree will be completed in three summers with a one-credit online seminar during each fall and spring semester (to monitor student development and to ensure continuous enrollment). Additional time may be required to complete the thesis.
The fundamental philosophy of the degree is to assist and enhance the ability of public and private school music specialists to teach music effectively to every student. To obtain this goal, music educators will be stimulated by current research in music to seek, evaluate, and appropriately implement current ideas and developments in teaching music.
The degree candidates will complete approximately nine credit hours each summer for three summers, including courses in general education and teaching pedagogies, as well as specialty courses in choral, instrumental, general, and jazz methods.
Summer courses are also open to non-degree seeking students as workshops.
