Experiencing Villa-Lobos




Villa-Lobos
This conference will bring together interested scholars to discuss recent developments in Villa-Lobos research and explore new ways of reading and hearing music by this composer.
Possible topics include:
  • new analytical approaches
  • Villa-Lobos' relationship to American and European contemporaries
  • biographical discoveries
  • questions of genre
  • text setting, text origins, literary influences
  • performance practice
  • recusancy and political controversy
  • the reception of Villa-Lobos' music since his death in 1959.
The festival will include concerts (featuring Cuarteto Latinoamericano and pianist Sonia Rubinsky), master classes, paper presentation sessions, and a round-table discussion.

There is a limit of one contributed submission per lead author.



All submissions must be received by December 1, 2007.

Please submit abstracts (up to 500 words) to Dr. Patrick Smith, Paper Presentation Coordinator, at psmith7@vcu.edu.

Paper presentations should be no more than 25 minutes in length.
