Jim Long
Department Chair
MARCH, BFA, The University of Kansas, Lawrence. Mr. Long’s areas of specialization are fine art figurative and abstract photography, experimental video and color theory. His paintings, photographs and videos have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions and published in books and journals throughout the USA, Europe and Asia; and his photographs are part of the permanent collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. He is the recipient of a VCU Faculty Grant-In-Aid, an Art Matters International Fellowship, a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Foundation Professional Fellowship, and other prizes and awards. Jim is the author of the second edition of the book, The New Munsell Student Color Set. Also he is an architectural designer who has completed over 70 architectural, interior and lighting design projects for clients across the USA. Jim is represented by the Wessel + O'Connor Gallery in New York and the G. Ray Hawkins Gallery in Santa Monica. (jlong@vcu.edu)

Sonali Gulati
MFA in Film & Media Arts, Temple University, BA in Critical Social Thought, Mount Holyoke College. Ms. Gulati's areas of specialization are film production and experimental filmmaking. Before coming to VCU, Ms. Gulati taught film production, film analysis, and international cinema at Temple University. Ms. Gulati has made several short films that have screened at over a hundred film festivals worldwide including Canada, United States, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, UK, Germany, Australia, and Asia. Ms. Gulati has won awards and grants from the Third Wave Foundation, World Studio Foundation, and PIFVA. Her recent documentary film titled "Nalini by Day, Nancy by Night" on outsourcing of telemarketing jobs to India has won various awards and has screened at several prestigious film festivals such as the Margaret Mead Film Festival and the Black Maria Film Festival.

John N. Heroy, Jr.
Head of the Program in Photography
MFA in Photography, University of Buffalo/Visual Studies Workshop, BFA in Photography, Rochester Institute of Technology. Mr. Heroy’s areas of specialization are fine art and digital photography. Before coming to VCU, Mr. Heroy worked in the exhibitions department of the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House. Mr. Heroy’s work has been exhibited internationally in many solo and group exhibitions at major venues and has been published in exhibition catalogs and magazines. He has served as a photography editor of the New Virginia Review and as a Beta tester for Adobe and other producers of image-editing software. Associate Professor Heroy has won numerous awards, including the Virginia Commission for the Arts Professional Fellowship and many prizes. (jnheroy@vcu.edu)

David Williams
Head of the Program in Filmmaking
MFA in Filmmaking, Virginia Commonwealth University. Mr. Williams is an independent filmmaker with the following unique credentials: writer, cinematographer, editor, and producer of his own films. He has produced four feature films including Lillian and Thirteen that have brought him worldwide recognition. Lillian had its first public screening at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival and won a Special Jury Award for Distinction. The Hollywood Reporter listed Lillian seventh in its 1993 top ten list. Mr. Williams has been awarded two major grants: a Rockefeller Fellowship (1995) and a National Endowment for the Arts Grant (1995). (willd@vcu.edu)

Tracie Taylor
Department Program Coordinator/Head Undergraduate Academic Advisor
MFA, Photography and Film, BFA Crafts, Virginia Commonwealth University. Ms. Taylor's area of expertise is fine art manipulated photography. Her photographs have been internationally exhibited and published in exhibition catalogues, books, and magazines. Also her photographs are included in the permanent collection of The National Women's Museum of Art, The Academy of Art, Easton, MD, and numerous private and corporate collections. Paul Thulin
Coordinator of Graduate and Visiting Artist Programs
MFA in Photography, Virginia Commonwealth University, BA in Philosophy, Virginia Commonwealth University. Mr. Thulin’s areas of specialization are fine art and digital photography. His work has been exhibited nationally in solo and group exhibitions and has been published in exhibition catalogs and art publications. He has been the recipient of several photographic prizes and awards including a 2001 TPI National Graduate Fellowship. His imagery explores the social constructs of history and the nature of performance, personal identity, memory, and myth. Jake Dodd

MFA in Photography and Film, Virginia Commonwealth University, BFA in Film, Ithaca College. Professor Dodd’s area of specialization is docu-dramatic film. He has produced, written, and directed several short and feature-length films, many of which were shot on film stock and digitally edited. His films have been screened at festivals across the USA.
