A sculptor has a special set of problems depicting the eye in a self portrait. I want to get all around the eye: above it, below it, behind it, see what it's doing when it rotates. It is an invasive instinct, for which a mirror, or mirrors, are insufficient. At the instant I look, I change what I'm trying to see. If the eye lights up, what does that look like? Or if it is "looking within"? Or into the future? I need an eye for an eye..." |
