Detail: The Sizes of Things in the Mind's Eye (first version)
1991-99
Installation: mixed media, sculpture and video

I combined three works in this installation: a figure study in plaster, a porcelain portrait head, and a film animation. The two figures, half life-size in scale, stand on a pedestal/stage 28 x 96 x 60 inches. The stop-frame film animation is made with a third figure: the sculpture "Pupil." It depicts a dream-like sequence of fragmentary gestural movements, the body in ruminative or involuntary motion. Remastered for digital video disc, the animation is projected through a lens in the wall so that the moving image hovers in space in the plane of the empty frame (a photograph can't capture this optical phenomenon).
