Undergraduate Program in Sculpture

The Sculpture Department at Virginia Commonwealth University is a major force in the School of the Arts. It is one of the country's best undergraduate programs and has over 100 undergraduate sculpture majors‹making it the largest in the United States. The graduate program is ranked among the top 5 in the United States and attracts students from around the globe, students who are drawn by the ever-increasing visibility of the department's alumni, and the reputation of a highly diversified and motivated faculty.

The department's 6 full-time instructors and active visiting artist program represent a variety of directions and philosophical attitudes related to the making of sculpture. Their interests range from formal to conceptual; they work in wood, steel, computer imaging and multimedia, plaster, plastics, video, performance, photography, holography, and robotics. The breadth of interests presented to students contribute to the comprehensive nature of our department. Students are exposed not only to traditional sculpture media, but also are encouraged to explore technology's parameters and to pursue interdisciplinary activity.

Because of the size and sophistication of the School of the Arts and the University, students in sculpture have the enviable opportunity to broaden their experience in other areas. Sculpture students have rich and productive associations with professors in many fields, such as painting, art history, photography, computer science, engineering, video, dance, the humanities, creative writing, ceramics, etc. By encouraging our students to take a wide range of courses throughout the University, we continue to stress the links between art, science, the humanities and the conditions of the world.

Our students are asked to exploit the limits of their potential, challenge the notions of contemporary art and be a force in the evolution of our culture. Our goal is to provide students with the seeds of discernment, vocabulary, and skills of analysis and synthesis to become participants in the dialogue of our age. All of this takes place in an environment of high expectation regarding self-motivation, intellectual capacity and responsibility.

The faculty is proud of the quality of work produced, but perhaps an even greater source of pride is the strength of the bond that exists, long after graduation, between the faculty and the hundreds of students who have completed the program.
