Midsummer's Night Dream
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Auditions, Portfolios, and Interviews

Auditions
Performance applicants are required to have an audition for the Department of Theatre faculty. Prepare two contrasting (one comedy and one dramatic) one-minute monologues from published play scripts. Use the following guidelines in preparing for the audition:
• Choose something in your appropriate age range that does not contain a dialect.
• Secure assistance in the preparation of the audition materials.
• Introduce the audition pieces by stating only the play's author, title and the character's name. Background information on the scene or plot is not necessary.
• Maintain a positive attitude, dress comfortably and most importantly, have fun!

To increase your competitive edge, please avoid auditioning with major characters from the following plays: Getting Out, The Glass Menagerie, Hamlet, Macbeth, 'night, Mother and Spoon River Anthology . We also find that the following playwrights are generally overdone or are more difficult for high school seniors to deliver successfully: Mamet, O'Neill, Pinter, Shakespeare, Shepard, and Williams.

Portfolio Reviews
Design/Technology and stage management applicants are required to complete the six design exercises listed in the School of the Arts application.

Complete and send the six drawing and design exercises included in the School of the Arts admissions packet. On the day of your portfolio review, bring any other examples of your previous work, such as photographs, renderings, floor plans, or other pertinent materials. Art classwork and other art projects will also be appropriate.

Interviews
Theatre Education applicants, as well as performance, design/technology, and stage management will be interviewed by one or more faculty members. The purpose of the interview is to get to know more about the applicants -- their interests, commitment, and communication skills.
The interview is as important as the audition or portfolio review. Applicants should be prepared to discuss their recent theatre activities and career goals.
