Performance and
Theatre Education Applicants

Performance and theatre education majors are required to have an audition and interview with the faculty. Prepare two contrasting (one comedy and one dramatic) one-minute monologues (for a total of two minutes) from published play scripts. Use the following guidelines in preparing for the audition:

• Choose something in the appropriate age range that does not contain a dialect.

• Secure assistance in the preparation of the audition material.

• Introduce the audition pieces by stating only the play's title and the characters name. Background information on the scene or plot is not necessary.

• Maintain a positive attitude, dress comfortably and most importantly, have fun!

Special note for auditions:
To increase your competitive edge, please avoid auditioning with major characters from the following plays: Getting Out, Glass Menagerie, Hamlet, Macbeth, 'night, Mother, Spoon River Anthology
We also find that the following playwrights are generally overdone or are more difficult for high school seniors to deliver successfully: Mamet, O'Neill, Pinter, Shakespeare, Shepard, Williams

Design/Technical applicants
Design/Technical applicants required to complete the six design exercises listed in the School of the Arts application. They are not required to audition. Complete and send the six drawing and design exercises included in the School of the Arts admissions packet. Bring examples of your previous work, such as photographs, renderings, floor plans, and other pertinent material. Art class work and any art projects will also be appropriate.

All applicants, whether the emphasis is performance, design, or theatre education will be interviewed by one or more faculty members. The purpose of the interview is to get to know more about the applicants: their interests, commitment, and communication skills. Applicants should be prepared to discuss their recent theatre activities and career goals.
