Profile: Dr. Randolph T. Barker (Randy) is a tenured Professor of Management at Virginia Commonwealth University's (VCU) School of Business. He teaches at the doctoral, masters and bachelor levels in the areas of organizational communication, team leadership and development and strategic change. He is a Professor of Healthcare Administration for the Medical College of Virginia's Healthcare Patient Safety Fellows Program of which he is a Faculty Fellow. He also teaches in the Fast Track Executive MBA Program (past Faculty Advisor)and the Fast Track Executive Information Systems Program in the VCU School of Business. Dr. Barker has also worked in the private sector with Union Carbide as an Employee Relations Associate and in the Public Sector as an Executive Assistant. Dr. Barker is a graduate of Florida State University. In the areas of teaching and research, Dr. Barker has been recognized internationally by receiving The Association for Business Communication Outstanding Teaching Award in 1994 and in 2004 the association’s Outstanding Research Award; regionally by receiving The Virginia Commonwealth University Outstanding Teaching Award; and locally by receiving the VCU School of Business Outstanding Teaching Award. His research has also been recognized by receiving the School of Business Distinguished Research Award, and highest School of Business award-The Award of Excellence recognizing achievement in the areas of Service, Research and Teaching. He is keynote speaker at numerous academic and professional association meetings. He has also had three Best paper awards from different associations. He is a member of the Executive Committee for the Medical College of Virginia, Center for Human Animal Interaction and is the first elected Public Regent to American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists Board of Regents. His years of service to the Association for Business Communication (ABC) includes being a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Business Communication, a member of the ABC Publications Board, recently serving as Chair; a member on the Board of Directors for the Association for Business Communication (ABC); served on the Research Committee of ABC; coordinated a multi-regional ABC Conference; has presented numerous papers, presentations and panels at ABC national and regional meetings; and chaired ad hoc committees. He has served as reviewer for best papers and proposals for many ABC regional conferences as well as Southern Management Association and Decision Sciences Institute. He was recently elected as a Fellow of ABC. He is Past President for the Association for Business Communication having served the offices of Second and First Vice Presidents as well.

Education: The Florida State University (B.A., M.A., and Ph.D.)Post Doctorate work includes 36 hours advanced graduate study in Business Administration at Marshall University,and University of West England Exchange Program.

Professional Experience: His extensive training and consulting experience has included work with such organizations as Ortho Pharmaceuticals, Hercules, Fort James, Richfood, KPMG, Branch Cabell, ABB, AT&T, Central State Hospital, Agouron Pharmaceuticals, DSCR, Philip Morris, Markel, and the Commonwealth of Virginia's Health Department to name a few. He has served as a trainer for the Commonwealth of Virginia's Management Institute. Much of his work includes coaching senior staff in enhancing presentation performance skills, team development and improvement at all levels, virtual team building and communication, and organizational change. He was the Senior Project Director for The Management Development Program at the Charleston Area Medical Center. The project focused on developing 18 modules and videotapes, and train the trainer's activities for a stand-alone program. Additionally, he was the Director of the Internal Controls training and staff development program for Fort James Corporation.

Teaching: Professor of Management at Virginia Commonwealth University's (VCU) School of Business. He teaches at the doctoral, masters and bachelor levels in the areas of organizational communication, team leadership and change. He is a Professor of Healthcare Administration for the Medical College of Virginia's Healthcare Fellows Program and teaches in the Fast Track Executive MBA Program (past Faculty Advisor) and the Fast Track Executive Information Systems Program in the VCU School of Business.

Research: His intersts include multidimensional aspects of organizational communication including team leadership, listening, and strategy. Dr. Barker has published extensively in such journals as The Journal of Management Development, The Journal of Business Communication, The Journal of Business and Technical Communication, Management Communication Quarterly, The Journal of Writing and Technical Communications, The Journal of Business Research, The Journal of Management Education and Training, The Journal of Individual Psychology, Business Communication Quarterly and others. His research is cited in numerous communication and management texts and dissertations. He serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Individual Psychology, The Journal of Business and Technical Communication, The Journal of Business Communication and Ad Hoc Reviewer for the Journal of Management Education. Dr. Barker has presented papers throughout the United States, eastern and Western Europe, United Kingdom, Canada, and the Caribbean.
