CARMA Scholars Program

Overview
Schedule

We are excited to present you with information on the 2008-2009 CARMA Scholars Program, which I hope will be of interest to your doctoral students. The goal of this program is to give the opportunity to VCU doctoral students from a variety of social science based disciplines for advanced training in research methods and data analysis techniques. Our program next year will include lectures on methodological and statistical topics presented by ten distinguished visiting methodologists, nearly all of whom are past/current Editors and Editorial Board members from leading organizational and methodological journals. Topics include Goodness of Fit and Structural Equation Models, Measurement Invariance and
Applied Research, Relative Importance of Predictors with Regression Models, Restriction of Range, Discontinuous Growth Models, Nonlinear Dynamic Models, Strategy and Research Methods Development, Advanced Panel Methods for Strategy Research, Publishing Criteria for Qualitative Research, Conditional Reasoning and Personality Measurement. In addition to these lectures, our program will also include a two-day winter short course, and the topic this year is Intermediate Structural Equation Methods: Assessing Model Adequacy. The complete schedule for this year’s program is provided at the end of this email.

Doctoral students who participate in the CARMA Scholars Program will receive three units of academic credit for their involvement during the Program, which spans across the fall, winter, and spring semesters. The course through which this occurs is Mgmt 703: “Advanced Topics in Research Methods for Organizational Studies.” We encourage graduate students who have had introductory statistical coursework to participate and students are welcome to participate even if they were in the program last year (the lectures vary each year).

Students choosing the credit option will be required to attend all sessions, complete readings, take quizzes, complete short assignments, and submit a year-end paper based on a data analysis project. Program sessions will be generally presented from noon through 4:00 pm (see schedule below). The short course will be held during the winter break in January right before classes resume (Jan. 10-12).

Those students who are interested in participating next year should send an email to us (carma@vcu.edu) to help in planning and to aid in future communication. Let us know if you have questions.
