| Description: The Research Scientist will perform laboratory experiments to elucidate mechanisms by which staphylococci regulate genes that make them resistant to antibiotics. Will use the tools of molecular biology including isolation of DNA and RNA; cloning genes; expressing and isolating proteins; analysis of proteins, RNA and DNA by gel electrophoresis; and using antibody to proteins to examine them in gels and isolate them form solution. Must be proficient in DNA sequence analysis and use software to compare DNA sequences among different strains of bacteria. Must also be proficient in the techniques of microbiology in order to grow bacteria in both solid and liquid culture, analyze their growth rates and assess their susceptibility to antibiotics. Is expected to present data at national and international meetings, write research papers and submit them for publication and write research grant proposals. Will also supervise and mentor graduate students and organize a monthly journal club for lab members. Will collaborate with faculty in the Department of Chemistry, School of Pharmacy on the elucidation of protein structure by X-ray crystallography and NMR. | |
| Qualifications: The applicant must have at least two years experience working with staphylococci and bacterial resistance to antimicrobial agents, have a PhD degree in microbiology or molecular biology and have extensive experience with the techniques of molecular biology, bacterial genetics and basic microbiology. Support is from a NIH grant and is appropriate to training and experience. | |
