| Description: The Office of International Education at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of its English Language Program. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of the Office of International Education and will begin on or about July 1, 2009. The Office of International Education comprises six units that serve the needs of international students and scholars as well as students learning abroad: international recruitment, immigration, admissions, advising, English language, and education abroad. Since 2006, OIE administers the newly created 15 International Partnership Universities initiative. The English Language Program Directors responsibilities include providing intellectual and instructional leadership for a growing program of over 20 full time faculty that enrolls more than 300 students per term. The Director also represents the English Language Program within VCU and beyond and furthers the ELPs traditions of excellence in language and culture instruction, scholarly and applied research, professional development, and community engagement. | |
| Qualifications: Required: Masters in TESOL, Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics or related field (ABD/PhD preferred); Significant and productive leadership and administrative experience; Demonstrated success in second language classroom instruction; budget and resource processing and management experience; A record of significant achievement in one or more of the following areas: research/publication, teaching, and program development; Strong interpersonal, cross-cultural, and written/oral communication skills and proven ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty; Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of the field of TESOL including application of technology to enhance instruction; Native-speaker-level proficiency in English. Preferred: Experience in teaching training; Potential to develop research and pedagogy with colleagues across the university; Interest in developing experiential learning programs; Speaking knowledge of a second language. | |
