Description:  The Mechanical Engineering Department at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for tenure-track and collateral (teaching intensive) faculty positions at all ranks in support of a nuclear engineering track recently established within the department.
Qualifications:  Applicants must possess a PhD in nuclear engineering or a closely related discipline, and while all areas of nuclear engineering will be considered, preference will be given to applicants with expertise in materials science and nuclear power generation. Candidates should demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills. For the tenure-track position, junior candidates will have demonstrated a strong potential for success in both teaching and sponsored research, while candidates for a more senior rank must have an established record of successful teaching and research. Particularly attractive is experience that demonstrates an ability to initiate interdisciplinary research and educational synergies among diverse areas. Collaborations are encouraged with other VCU units such as the Medical Campus, the Schools of Business and Arts, and the College of Humanities and Sciences. The collateral, teaching-intensive faculty position is non-tenure-track and the successful candidate will be required to teach both graduate and undergraduate core classes in nuclear engineering. Salary and fringe benefits are competitive for both positions.

VCU is the largest university in Virginia and is located on two campuses in the thriving city of Richmond. The School of Engineering, which enrolled its first class of students in 1996, has outstanding state-of-the-art classroom, laboratory and computational resources and offers ABET accredited programs in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical & Life Science Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering. Mechanical Engineering received ABET accreditation in Fall 2001 and again in Fall 2007. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollments in Mechanical Engineering are 320 and 60 students, respectively. The department currently has thirteen full-time faculty with research areas that include smart materials and sensors, robotics and mechatronics, manufacturing, computational mechanics, energy conversion systems, flow control, and micro/nanotechnology. Additional information about the VCU School of Engineering can be found at www.egr.vcu.edu.
Application Process:  Applicants for both positions should submit a curriculum vita containing a teaching plan and philosophy, along with the names of four references. Applicants for the tenure-track position should also include a description of their current and future research. Hardcopy of the application should be sent via U.S. mail or alternative courier service to Dr. P. Worth Longest, Chair of the Search Committee, Mechanical Engineering, Virginia Commonwealth University, 401 W. Main Street, P. O. Box 843015, Richmond, VA 23284-3015. Candidates must be eligible for employment in the United States. Review of applications will continue until the positions are filled. Virginia Commonwealth University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. Women, minorities and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
