Buñuel's first "comeback" film since "L'Age d'Or" in 1930 (he made only a few musicals in the interim), "El Gran Calavera" concerns a family's attempts to change the patriarch's somewhat indulgent and hedonistic ways by fooling him into thinking his large fortune is gone. They assume a life of poverty in Mexico in an attempt to teach him a lesson. However, he discovers it's a ruse, but continues to perpetuate the facade of ignorance while sneaking off during the day to conduct his thriving business. Why? To teach his family a lesson - they are all lazy, worthless leeches!

| Spanish | El Mar (The Sea) | SF0028 |

Agusti Villaronga directs this intensely morbid love story about fascist executions, disease, bloody animal abuse, and violent homoeroticism. Set in a small village on the island of Mallorica during the Spanish civil war, four children witness the execution of leftists at the hands of pro-Franco villagers. In a desperate act of revenge, one of the children kills the son of the lead executioner. Ten years later, the three survivors of the incident find themselves recuperating in a sanitarium. Fragile Manuel, who suffers from TB, has fervently embraced Christianity, while violent Andreu, who also suffers from the disease, boasts about his womanizing exploits while secretly longing for Morell, an elderly male black marketeer. The third survivor is Francisca who, after losing her virginity to Andreu, became a nun working as a nurse at the institute. As the two young men's sickness deepens, they grow increasingly tormented. Manuel violently reacts to his attraction to Andreu by growing even more fanatically religious, while Andreu's sexual frustration results in him brutally killing a cat.
| Spanish | El Norte | SF0124 |
|
|
Beginning in the remote mountain jungles of Guatemala, awash with the lushness of nature and the rainbow colors of the Mayans, this highly-acclaimed drama about a brother and sister seeking a better life centers on two young Indians. When their father is killed by government soldiers and their mother is taken away, they set out for the “promised land” to the north- El Norte. It is a perilous journey fraught with dangers. Tijuana is a dismal shantytown inhabited by many people who are ready to cheat and kill for their meager possessions. To cross the U.S. border, they must brave a treacherous rat-infested sewage tunnel. And when they finally reach Los Angeles their trials are not yet over, for they are “illegals” sub-merged in an alien culture. A stunningly photographed, powerfully acted, moving story, El Norte is a dream imagery hailed as “an enormously special film, a work of great sophistication that… has the truth, the magic of a piece of folk art.”
