Description: NOTE: VCU will be migrating to Blackboard v9.0 in May of 2010. To assist faculty members with this transition, the CTE will begin offering workshops that focus on using Blackboard 9.0 in March of 2010.

Blackboard 9 is the first big update in Blackboard in years. It has powerful assessment capabilities. Formative assessment is directed towards improving learning, as opposed to summative assessment, which grades results. Students learning is enhanced when both are present. A variety of online tools can be used for both formative and summative assessment. This workshop explores Blackboard Survey Manager, Pool Manager and Test Manager. In addition to creating graded quizzes and tests, one can develop surveys and self-assessments using these tools. We will also explore the use of two software packages that work with Bb: Respondus and StudyMate. Respondus batch loads questions from existing Word documents or publisher test banks into a Blackboard ready format. Once exams are incorporated into Respondus, they can be repurposed into study guides or study games (think crossword puzzles or Jeopardy games) using StudyMate. Respondus and StudyMate are available as free downloads to all VCU faculty members. Finally, we will examine online polling options that can be used in lieu of clickers. All of these offer opportunities for more formative assessments in your classes.
