School-based Approaches to Preventing Youth Violence
As the only institution in the United States that young people are required to attend, schools have increasingly become the site of a wide range of prevention initiatives, including efforts to address conflict and violence.
Schools use a wide range of different approaches to resolving conflict and preventing violence. Some of the most common approaches include:
- Social development programs and curricula
- Classroom and school climate approaches
- Conflict resolution/negotiation training
- Mediation
- Discipline programs and policies
- School security systems
The goals of these approaches range from preventing problems before they occur, to responding swiftly and fairly when problem behavior arises, to containing the behavior and then preventing it from recurring. A comprehensive plan for youth violence prevention will typically include a number of these approaches working in combination.
