About Prevention Levels

One way of categorizing different types of prevention approaches is a system of "prevention levels" now commonly used within a variety of prevention fields. The three levels of prevention—universal, selective, and indicated—describe different groups of people to whom the prevention effort may be directed.
Universal school-based youth violence prevention efforts are those that are provided to entire group students (e.g., all students in a particular school system, school, or grade level), regardless of whether specific students have shown any particular problem with conflict or violence.

Selective approaches are those provided to sub-groups of students that are expected to be at higher risk for problems with conflict or violence (e.g., special youth violence prevention programs for students who are known to be engaged in substance abuse or are often truant).

Indicated approaches are provided to specific students who have already shown signs of having a problem with conflict or violence (e.g., students how are aggressive or have behavioral control problems).

These three approaches are often combined together in an overall plan to address conflict and violence.
