About Comp-E-ValTM
Comp-E-Val is a web-enabled, competency-based evaluation system that allows preceptors to easily store performance information from precepting encounters and other opportunities for evaluation into a database for analysis and timely feedback to residents. It was designed by Drs. Charles Frazier and Jon Kaminer and other faculty members at Riverside Family Practice Residency, utilizing some of the evaluation formats of Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency, another VCU Family Practice Residency. The competencies measured are those required by the ACGME, and the application is flexible enough that each program can decide which competencies are measured in which settings. For example, your program may decide that it can adequately evaluate 10 competencies while precepting, another 6 competencies with patient surveys, 12 competencies with rotation evaluations, etc. The wording of the competencies can be customized also. Comp-E-Val stores those evaluations, regardless of source, into a database on the web. Multiple users can enter information at the same time, and any authorized faculty member can print out performance reports for residents. Residents can look at their own information at any time, if authorized.
At Riverside we gather evaluation information from precepting,
directly observed precepting, checkout rounds, lectures delivered by residents,
nurses, senior residents, junior residents, medical students, care managers
(discharge planners/social workers), patient surveys, and from rotation
evaluations.
There are modules to record procedures and to keep track of conference attendance.
Users can effectively take the application to a handheld device by using AvantGo to synchronize from the PDA to the web! Create a channel through AvantGo, synchronize, and you have the form(s) on your palm device. Collect the competency performance information, and, the next time you sync, the information is transferred from the PDA to the database!
Please take a moment to tour the application. You can access the demonstration module with the username "Demo" and the password "Demo" (without the quotes). The username and password are case-sensitive!!!
Comp-E-Val has been in use since June 2001 at Riverside Family Practice Residency and is now being used in many other family practice residencies across the country.
